L\u2019ext\u00e9rieur rappelle l\u2019Arc de Triomphe et est en pierre d\u2019Istrie. Elle est compos\u00e9e de huit colonnes surmont\u00e9es d\u2019une petite tour avec une horloge.<\/p>\n<p>Un petit \u00e9dicule datant de 1790 et d\u00e9di\u00e9 \u00e0 Santa Maria dei Barcaroli (Sainte-Marie des Bateliers) est situ\u00e9 face \u00e0 la porte, derri\u00e8re le pont. Dans le pass\u00e9, les voyageurs assistaient \u00e0 cet endroit \u00e0 la c\u00e9l\u00e9bration de la messe avant le d\u00e9part des \u00ab\u00a0burci\u00a0\u00bb (des embarcations).<\/p>\n<p>La porte a \u00e9t\u00e9 con\u00e7ue pour un emploi civil et commercial et non pour une utilisation militaire. On l\u2019appelle couramment Porta Portello parce qu\u2019il y avait autrefois l\u00e0 un petit port fluvial dans lequel les petits bateaux s\u2019arr\u00eataient.
